Indeed. I'm going to try to pull your writing to the front page today or tomorrow. But, Will is concerned about the copyright. I guess he liked it.

I love Richard Peck! Highly recommend "A Teacher's Funeral", lots of laughs and good nature in his writing.

As far as what I've learned? This week it is that writing test methods and actually executing them in the lab are quite different things.

I'm reading thru the We the People texts and writing up my Civics class outline for our homeschool group class this fall. Very fun! (I also just finished reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn for the millionth time.)

So, did these representations of order portray strength? I get that it was all there but I want to know to what purpose.... according to Homer.

I have to tell you this helped our discussion at the Academy too. I had used a quote from Nick Carr's "Is Google Making Us Stupid," and the discussion quickly turned to how smart (or not) we are... the next generation especially. What I appreciated a good deal about this article is that it focused on what we're doing with what we know. How we're using it... not just what facts (or what kind) we're piling up in our heads or in the clouds.

That's a reference to cloud computing there, Hexx. Don't want to confuse the luddite brain.

Hexxus007,

This article is terrific. It expands upon the argument I've had to make with greater frequency. I teach in a private school with parents increasingly bent on a facts and figures approach, at younger and younger ages. I thought it remarkable when the Chinese educators noted that they were moving toward our old (creative) model, while we were moving toward their old (rote) model. I couldn't agree more. I see it with the parents of 3-year olds who wish for homework; I see it with the movement toward Kumon and other outside drills. This, in a Montessori school! I plan to address this in our parent meetings this year. I will use the article to help.

Thanks!

Achilles' shield, as crafted by Hephaestus, from THE ILIAD...

The first thing he created was a huge and sturdy shield,
all wonderfully crafted. Around its outer edge,
he fixed a triple rim, glittering in the light,
attaching to it a silver carrying strap.
The shield had five layers. On the outer one,
with his great skill he fashioned many rich designs.
There he hammered out the earth, the heavens, the sea,
the untiring sun, the moon at the full, along with
every constellation which crowns the heavens—
the Pleiades, the Hyades, mighty Orion,
and the Bear, which some people call the Wain,
always circling in the same position, watching Orion,
the only stars that never bathe in Ocean stream.

Yeah, I was impressed with how far out the video went! It definitely makes some of the details back on the ground here seem a bit silly.
